Major parties in Punjab 1951-2012

The seat share of the regional party SAD (Shiromani Akali Dal) and the INC (Indian National Congress) has fluctuated a lot over the past 60 years. The biggest change was in the 1992 state legislature election when the seat share of SAD dropped to around 3% while the INC rose to around 75%. The INC seat share in the legislature is now around 40%.
